This day in History:
1517 Martin Luther nails his 95 Theses to the door of the church at Wittenberg in Germany. Luther's theories and writings inaugurate Protestantism, shattering the external structure of the medieval church and at the same time reviving the religious consciousness of Europe.
1803 Congress ratifies the purchase of the entire Louisiana area in North America, adding territory to the U.S. which will eventually become 13 more states.
1838 A mob of about 200 attacks a Mormon camp in Missouri, killing 20 men, women and children.
1941 After 14 years of work, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial is completed.
1952 The United States explodes the first hydrogen bomb at Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific.
1968 The bombing of North Vietnam is halted by the United States.
1971 Saigon begins the release of 1,938 Hanoi POW's.
1984 Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is assassinated in New Delhi by two Sikh members of her bodyguard.

The San Francisco Giants won their 3rd World Series in the past 5 seasons!
Giants win!!!!!    Remember they were the NY Giants until 1957! The Mets orange is to pay tribute to the them. (The Mets blue is to pay tribute to the Dodgers, who played in Brooklyn until 1957).

Today in History:
1838 Oberlin Collegiate Institute in Lorian County, Ohio becomes the first college in the U.S. to admit female students.
1922 Mussolini sends his black shirts into Rome. The Fascist takeover is almost without bloodshed. The next day, Mussolini is made prime minister. Mussolini centralized all power in himself as leader of the Fascist party and attempted to create an Italian empire, ultimately in alliance with Hitler's Germany.
1938 H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds is broadcast over the radio by Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre. Many panic believing it is an actual newscast about a Martian invasion.
1941 The U.S. destroyer Reuben James, on convoy duty off Iceland, is sunk by a German U-boat with the loss of 96 Americans.

Today we will - a) go over your notes from Ch 6 Section 1 & 2; discuss the Electoral College, based upon last night's homework.

There is a fantastic story in today's Journal-News regarding diversity in the lower Hudson Valley and Rockland - I recommend it to everyone - Diversity in Lower Hudson Valley

Today in History:
1910 - Blanche S. Scott became the first woman to make a public solo airplane flight in the United States. 

1929 - In the U.S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged starting the stock-market crash that began the Great Depression. 

1946 - The United Nations General Assembly convened in New York for the first time. 

1956 - Hungarian citizens began an uprising against Soviet occupation. On November 4, 1956 Soviet forces enter Hungary and eventually suppress the uprising. 

1956 - NBC broadcasted the first videotape recording. The tape of Jonathan Winters was seen coast to coast in the U.S. 

1958 - Russian poet and novelist Boris Pasternak was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. He was forced to refuse the honor due to negative Soviet reaction. Pasternak won the award for writing "Dr. Zhivago". 

1973 - U.S. President Richard M. Nixon agreed to turn over the subpoenaed tapes concerning the Watergate affair. 

1978 - China and Japan formally ended four decades of hostility when they exchanged treaty ratifications.

The last time the Kansas City Royals reached the World Series, I was a senior in high school!

San Francisco has a 3-games to 1 lead in the NLCS over the Cardinals

Today we will begin work on our 1st DBQ of the school year - it is on the US Constitution. You will begin working on it today in class and it will be due on Monday, October 20th.

THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - NY Jets will visit the New England Patriots - I know, I know, but I'm a Jet fan!
