Recently in Scotland they are voting on if they should become an independant nation from the UK. The connection is that the 13 colonies wanted to break away from Great Britian and become independant from them.

Well done Jessica! You will receive 5 bonus points!!! I have another question for you - Was it possible, given what you know now, that the colonies could have VOTED to break away, OR was the only possibility to go to war? Explain.

There was no way the 13 colonies could have voted to become independent. Great Britain is ruled by a monarchy, whatever he says goes,no king in his right mind would allow something like that to happen. The 13 colonies duty was to trade raw minerals with them & to obey the laws. Then they felt threatened by Britain which led to them rebelling, next thing you know the Boston Massacre happens! The only way the 13 colonies got their independence was the effect of the Declaration of Independence, natural rights, & the Bill of Rights. Look at us today, we had to of done something right!

Scotland was voting on whether or not to become an independent nation from Great Britain. The connection is that the American colonies also wanted to separate and become independent from England.

Great points Jessica! Ironically, what divided the colonies, brought them together - hence the Join or Die flag that we discussed in class.

Zach - Good work - 5 points is coming your way too!

What divided the colonies was the loyalty for Great Britain. They put words in some colonists heads that if they stay loyal to the crown, that they would grant them freedom and not punish them. While others were against Britain for what they done. The colonies were broken into 2 groups, the patriots and the loyalists. The patriots believed that Great Britain took their rights and their dignity. The loyalists were in basic fear of them and acted the way they did so their throats wouldn't be cut. What brought them together was the symbol of liberty. Then Benjamin Franklin created a flag that represented the importance of the colonial unity and freedom. After the American Revolutionary War, we gotten our identity and started setting up our governments.

Jandra Arias

People in Scotland recently voted for their independence from Great Britain. This event is similar to the event that occurred in the year 1776 when the 13 colonies wanted to gain independence from Britain. 55% of the people of Scotland voted No , so they will be staying under the British rule.

Jandra, Vanessa - Welcome to the discussion!!! You have also each earned 5 points!!! It will be interesting to see if the 55% to 45% split causes any friction in Scotland
